SUMMARY:September 2026 working bee
DESCRIPTION:Spring is in the air\, and the warmer weather has certainly arrived. Our next working bee is coming up this Monday\, and we will be moving upstream to Site 4\, adjacent to Site 5\, where we worked during our last working bee. Our focus will be on controlling priority weeds and pruning the lower limbs of plantings to help reduce the build-up of fuel loads. \nIn February 2027\, we hope to be planting replacement seedlings across Sites 4 and 5 (rainfall permitting). These new plantings will increase the diversity of species within our restoration areas. While the original revegetation efforts focused mainly on canopy species\, these additional plantings will strengthen and diversify the shrub layer. With the canopy now more established\, it will provide shelter and protection for these new seedlings\, improving their chances of long-term success and improving the habitat value of our sites. \nThe fantastic ranger team from the Bega Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) has been working across a range of sites along the Bega River this week. As part of their efforts\, they have targeted privet seedlings in and around Sites 4 and 5. This work will make an enormous contribution to our rehabilitation program\, allowing us to concentrate our efforts on other priority weeds. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Bega LALC ranger group for their valuable contribution to the restoration of the Bega River. \nHave you ever wondered how BRAWL plans its working bees? Our rehabilitation activities are guided by BRAWL’s Maintenance Strategy. \n\n\nDetails of our next working bee are as follows:\n\n\nWhen: Monday 7th September: 9.30 – 12.30pm\nWhat: Site 5 – Priority weed removal – privet\, turkey rhubarb\, cape ivy\, madeira vine\, noogoora burr and removal of lower branches from established plantings.\nWhere: Meet on Jacksonia Grove\, halfway between the Old Bega Racecourse end and the Anabranch picnic area (follow link to location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/8FBvqdHNvkhGCZjS7)\nBring: Drink bottle\, garden gloves\, weed bags\, weeding tool\, and secateurs (some tools will be provided).\nWear: Enclosed sturdy footwear\, sun hat and sun-smart clothing.\nMorning tea: is at 11am\, please bring something to share or to enjoy yourself.\n\nThis BRAWL working bee is supported through the Bega Valley Shire Council’s  Community and Environment Grants.
