About Us

Bega River and Wetlands Landcare (BRAWL) Group is a passionate community organisation committed to restoring and preserving the natural habitat along the Bega River and wetlands. For nearly two decades, BRAWL has tirelessly worked to re-establish riparian corridors that serve as refuges for native fauna, including threatened species.

Our efforts include:

  • Monthly working bees – on the first Monday of the month where volunteers come together to contribute to the restoration process.
  • Fun community tree-planting events, open to everyone who shares our passion for environmental conservation.
  • Addressing the severe degradation of the Bega River caused by erosion, weed invasion, and loss of biodiversity since European settlement.

Since our formation in 2006, BRAWL has received funding from diverse sources to carry out significant projects and ongoing activities. These projects have transformed the Bega River, turning it into a cherished community reserve where people visit regularly to walk, ride, run, picnic and swim.

BRAWL continues to collaborate with the Bega Valley Shire Council, State government, community groups, local primary and high schools, and business to rehabilitate over three kilometers of the river.

Our initiatives encompass:

  • Protecting ancient, remnant River Oaks.
  • Controlling invasive weeds.
  • Revegetating with native plants.
  • Stabilising river banks.
  • Reconnecting vegetation links with nearby Spenco Lagoon.
  • Flora and fauna monitoring and community information/field days.
  • Creating a family-friendly recreational space.

BRAWL has a strong active core of volunteers committed to this ongoing rehabilitation effort, and we warmly invite you to join us in making a positive impact on the environment. Your help is invaluable! Volunteer today!
